Femeg-Building
Fishing-techniques
Aquaculture
Aquaculture includes controlled aquatic breeding. "Aquatic" means organisms that live in the water, especially fish, mussels, crabs and algae. Due to over-fishing and an increasing international demand in particular, aquaculture is becoming increasingly important.
Catching methods for ground-fish
Ground-fish can be caught with different types of trawl nets. One protective method is the so-called "Danish seine nets", in which the net is held just above the seabed on rollers. Following its strict controls Femeg only buys ground-fish from fisheries that use this modern fishing method.
Long line
This fishing method involves a main line of up to several kilometres being pulled by boats and from which several secondary lines branch off. These lines are equipped with special fishing gear and bait depending on the relevant fish species. Using this gentle fishing method reduces the by-catch and prevents damage of the seabed.
Pelagic nets
This type of net is used for shoal fish, which do not live on the seabed, but between the seabed and the water’s surface. Depending on the type of fish, nets are pulled over several kilometres through the open sea where the shoals are located and then encircled. The further development of these techniques continuously reduces the by-catch.

Producing international fish trends and classics with premium frozen freshness and quality– that is Femeg's speciality.

In the 20 years since it was founded, Femeg, as a pioneer, has discovered many new types of fish for the freezer. "Diversity, not quantity" is therefore not only a philosophy for fish aficionados and discoverers, but also a sensible, modern way of dealing with natural resources.

Founded in 1989 as a family-run company in Bargteheide near Hamburg, Femeg has continuously developed into one of today’s leading brands for frozen fish and seafood specialities.

The construction of the new company headquarters was completed in 2009 in Rehna, in the northern German federal state of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. This is where Femeg turns fish from all over the world into natural filets and premium convenience products using the most modern production facilities.

With the quality hallmark "Selected Seafood", since 2005 Femeg has also been displaying it clear commitment to strictly controlled processing and the transparent purchasing of raw goods on its packaging. Femeg’s own teams based in the different originating countries of the processed fish and seafood check and advise the local partners in all quality management matters. This close contact to the corresponding fisheries guarantees that every product undergoes multiple checks, from being caught to the finished packaging, and its entire route is documented. In the use-by date section of every Femeg product this route is coded with an individual batch number and printed on the packaging with details about the precise area it was caught and the exact declaration of the fish type with its Latin name.
